Lychakiv Cemetery is a famous and historic cemetery in Lviv. Initially opened in 1787 in compliance with an Austrian law to move burials from the centre of town, the cemetery soon became one of Europe's finest. Generations of citizens were laid to rest here: intelligentsia, bourgeoisie and nobility especially. Lychakiv cemetery now is an open air museum and more than that: a "gallery of art work", showing graves of many renowned personalities of the ukrainian and polish culture and sciennces, like Ivan Franko, Solomiya Kruschelnytska, Gabriela Zapolska, Stefan Banach, Maria Konopnicka and many others.

The first Museum of brewing in Ukraine, contained in a building of Õ²Õ century. Museum invites for a trip to know the history of beer making, not only in our country, but also all over the world, beginning from ancient times to nowadays. Basic idea of museum – showing to the visitors traditions of brewing of Lviv, museum exhibits will confirm that brewing in Lviv is really old, that makes our city a capital Ukrainian beer.

Zhovkva is located 23 kilometers northeast of Lviv and boasts many sights dating from the 17th and 18the century. Embedded in a lovely landscape this town is a gem of the Renaissance. You will see the Main Market Square – a beautyful renaissance ensemble, the Cathedral of Saint Lawrence (1606) as well as the castle (1594-1606) and its ruins of old defensive constructions, the monastery of the Dominicans (1653-1655), the synagoge dating from the 17th century, the Monastery of the Basilians with the church of the feast of Christ rom the 17th century, the Church of the Holy Trinity – a lovely church made of wood dating from the early 18th century and last not least the Church of the Birth of Mary.

The village of Krekhiv is a beautiful nature reserve. In Krechiv you will visit the buildings of the Monastery of Vassilius. The caves cells of this monastery are well preserved, dating from the beginning 17th century. Years later, the Church of Saint NIcholas was built, the monastery was fortified by walls and towers. Many renowned persons have visited the monastery in the course of Ukrainian history. During the reign of the Soviet communism the monastery was shut down. Only 1990 the monks returned. After extensive works of renovation the monastery now shines again and radiates its splendour.

Olesko – small town in Lviv region famous by his castle. The castle of Olesko is mentioned for the first time in manuscripts in 1327. It is visible by far with the top of a 50 meters high solitary hill which dominates the road towards Lviv. The castle is of plan oval with solid buttresses and a pleasant interior court. Today it shelters an appendix of the Gallery of Arts of Lviv where antiquities and objects d'art are presented. Around the fortress a park decorated into 1996 extends from modern sculptures which contrast agreeably with old constructions.

Brody is located in the northeastern part of the Lviv for 93 km from the city. The first mention of a settlement on the site of Brody is dated 1084. Name the city comes from the fact that Brody situated on the road crossing of two rivers with impassable swampy floodplains. That crossing over them held together well-defined areas – fords, brody in ukrainian. There are many architectural monuments, a mong them: ancient fortress, Trinity Church (1726), ruins of the Great Synagogue (1742), Chamber of Commerce of the XIX century etc.

The ethnographic museum of folk architecture and rural life Shevchenkivskyi Gai is an amazingly harmonic and cozy place in Lviv's center. Here, on the territory of 60 hectares, museum's creators placed over 120 architectural sites and a bulk of folk life objects, which were brought here from Western Ukraine's various corners. In doing so they skillfully used natural relief that is surprisingly reminiscent of Carpathian landscapes. The whole territory of the museum of folk architecture and life is provisionally divided into six historical and ethnographical zones. Each of them is a mini-village with all attributes of 18th-19th centuries' country life that were typical for one or another Western Ukraine's people. Shevchenkivskyi Gai s architectural complex consists of ancient huts and household buildings, churches, smithy, sawmill, water and wind mills.

Excursion in the ancient quarter includes a lot of places of historical importance: Rynok ("Market") square of Renaissance style, Armenian Cathedral, The Latin Cathedral, The Boim's Chapel, Renaissance ensemble of the Church of the Assumption, The Church of Body of Christ of the Dominican Order.

Lviv Opera and Ballet House is one of famous and most beautiful places in Europe. It has the name of famous Ukrainian singer Solomia Krushelnytska. Her charming voice was heard on every famous world stage together with great singers of the 20th century such as Caruso, Batistini, Shalyapin, and conductor Toscanini. It was for Krushelnytska that Jacomo Puccini composed the opera “Cio-Cio-San”.

The theatre was built in 1900 by a famous architect Z. Gorgolevsky in the style of “Vienna pseudo Renaissance” which is a mixture of different architectural styles. This imposing building is richly decorated from the outside and has sumptuous interior. The building of the theatre intrigues with its sculptural and picturesque richness. On the facade in the bay there are situated allegorical figures by A. Popiel and T. Baronch: Comedy on the left and Tragedy on the right. The bas-relief composition “Joys and Sufferings of Life” is in the three-cornered tympanum.

The Rynok Squre. For over 600 years the Rynok (Market) Square has been the central square in Lviv, preserving its original name and boundaries. The square is framed by 44 ancient stone buildings in various styles of sixteenth to twentieth centuries. Almost all of them underwent further reconstruction. At the four corners of the Rynok square there are symetrically placed fountains with figures of Neptune, Diana, Amphitrite and Adonis. These sculptures were constructed in 1810-1814 by sculptor Hartman Witwer. From each corner of the square two streets run in the direction of old, already unexistant city gates and wickets. In the centre of the Rynok Square stands a 65 metre-high tower. This is the building of the City Hall.

The Latin Cathedral impresses by its strict, majestic shape. The Latin Cathedral is the main seat of the Roman-Catholic Church in Lviv. It is a harmonious fusion of Gothic and Baroque, but also shows elements of Renaissance, Roccoco, Classicism and Art Nouveau. The foundation stone for the cathedral was laid in 1349 by the Polish king Kazimir the Great. From the old cemetery which surrounded the church until the midle of the XVIIIth century, the figure of Crist remains in a tomb built by the campians Chapel. The main altar contains the most precious relic of the temple – a copy of miracle-working Icon of Our Lady of Mercy. Much like all the architectural monuments, the cathedral has changed its look many times over the course of the centuries. The temple is decorated with seventeenth-century fresco painting as well as nineteenth-century stained glass windows which illuminate the temple with a subtle light.

The Armenian Cathedral of the Assumption of Our Lady was constructed in the fourteenth century when Lviv became the capital of the Armenian bishopry. The cathedral consist of three parts, each representing a different historical period. The most ancient of them is the multiornamented eastern part, which was built in the fourteenth century by the builder Dore (Doring). In the year 1905 the cathedral was restored. It was then that a new part was built and new paintings of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries were restored. The yard was covered with ancient Armenian tombs, the oldest of which come from the fourteenth century. The inside of the temple was decorated with contemporary paintings which are caracterized by the richness of composition and colour, mastery and refinement of paintings done by Jan Heinrich Rosen.

The Roman Catholic Church of Corpus Christi of the Dominican Order was constructed in 1749-1764 under the leadership of engineer-architect Jan de Vitte. The facade holds a Latin inscription: “Soli Deo Honor et Gloria” (honour and praise to the only God). After the fire of 1778 the church was restored and in 1865 a brelfy was added on the left where entrance to the cloister had been. Art critics suppose that the Dominican Xathedral is the most famous of the late Baroque period in Lviv. Part of the complex is the monastery building and the bell tower. Today, the monastery houses the Museum for Religious History. The Dominican Church is still used today by the Uniate Church.

The Cathedral of the Assumption of Mary (1581 -1629) with its bell tower that was named after its donor Kornjakt is one of the most beautiful buildings of Lviv. It is a fine example of Lviv's Renaissance architecture, and today is the seat of the Autokephalic (independent) Orthodox church, which is a faction of the Orthodox Church that does not subordinate itself to the Patriarch in Moscow. In Lviv, today, there is only one single church that subordinates itself to the Moscow patriarchy.

The stage is decorated with an original theatrical curtain called the “Parnassus” that was designed by famous Polish artist G. Semygradsky. “Parnassus” was painted in Rome at the end of the 19th century especially for the Lviv Opera House. The painting was exhibited in Rome and in Lviv art galleries before it was brought to the theatre right after its opening.

Olesko Castle is an outstanding architectural and historic monument from the 13th - 18th centuries, once a strong fortress of old Rus in the 14th century. Later in the 15th - 16th century Olesko Castle was turned into a palace for aristocracy and remodeled in the Italian Renaissance style in the 1620s. The famous Polish king Jan III Sobieski was born there in 1629. The king often lived in Olesko Castle and collected numerous art works. Afterwards the castle belonged to the Rzewuski family. After restoration in 1965-1975 Olesko Castle became a museum. Hundreds of unique paintings, sculptures and applied arts can be seen in the museum. Among them are icons, portraits, still-lives, the monumental picture of the Battle of Vienna, old furniture and wooden sculptures. In the Olesko Castle basement there is a well which also served as an escape passage for the besieged. A nice park with some modern sculptures surrounds Olesko Castle.

Pidhirtsi Castle is a unique architectural monuments in the late Renaissance style dating to 1635-1640. It belonged to the aristocratic Rzewuski family, was not intended as a defense structure and should be more accurately called a palace. Pidhirtsi Castle is surrounded by a moat and includes a Baroque church of St. Joseph (1752-1766). It has a wall with a heavy gate and a park with old trees. Pidhirtsi Castle has been under restoration after years when it was used as a Soviet hospital. It may take many years before it regains its pervious glory. However visitors are admitted and have to use their imagination when looking at once grand interiors. Visitors to Pidhirtsi Castle will be invited to take a short walk to see a beautiful wooden church of St. Michael from 1720.

Zolochiv Castle was built as a citadel with bastions in the 1630s. In the 17th - 18th centuries the castle belonged to the rich Polish families of Sobieski and Radziwill. In the days of Austro-Hungarian empire Zolochiv Castle was turned into a prison and later became a grim prison under Stalin. A memorial and an exhibition to commemorate those who perished here can now be seen in the castle as well as a chapel outside the the castle walls. Inside Zolochiv Castle visitors could see a newly restored Chinese palace built to follow European fashion for Chinese art in late 17th century. To the right is a larger residential palace undergoing restoration. From the bastions one could see surrounding countryside and the town of Zolochiv. Tourists would be taken to the old magic stone in the castle courtyard. It has engraved inscriptions in unknown language and a hole in the middle that will help fulfill your wishes if you put your finger there and turn.
